Controlled-Impedance Trace-Width Quick Estimator
First-pass microstrip / stripline trace width for 8–12 layer controlled-impedance stackups.
How to read this: Pick the target impedance, enter your dielectric height to the nearest reference plane and the laminate Dk, then estimate. The result is an approximate starting width from a closed-form IPC‑2141 equation — not a substitute for a 2D field solver. PCBark sets the final geometry against the actual stackup, copper weight and laminate at quote.
Single-ended uses an outer microstrip layer; differential modes apply an edge-coupled correction.
Prepreg / core thickness between the trace layer and its plane. Range 3–12 mil.
Default 4.3 for standard FR‑4 at ~1 GHz. Range 2.5–6.
