Certification comparison — scope, governing body and what it proves

Certification Governing body What it controls Primary industries
ISO 9001 ISO Baseline quality management system All — the floor for any supplier
IATF 16949 IATF Automotive QMS + PPAP / traceability Automotive
ITAR U.S. DoS (DDTC) Handling of controlled technical data Defense, aerospace
IPC-A-610 IPC Assembly acceptance (Class 1/2/3) All assembly
IPC-6012 IPC Rigid bare board qualification Fabrication, high-rel
UL / 94V-0 UL Material flammability & safety Consumer, industrial
RoHS / REACH EU (ECHA) Restricted & declared substances All shipped to the EU

Each standard governs a distinct layer of the build — from baseline QMS, through assembly and bare-board qualification, to material safety and substance compliance.

Quality Management Systems

Quality Management Systems — ISO 9001 & IATF 16949

ISO 9001

PCBark ISO 9001 quality management system certification for PCB manufacturing

A quality management system certification informs that your manufacturing plant consistently yields desired results. Not out of the blue or sheer luck, but by design. ISO 9001 serves as the baseline of every certified PCB manufacturer worth the name: clearly documented processes, feedback mechanisms, internal quality audits, and management review. Consider it as your prerequisite before engaging a provider, not a point of distinction – a PCB fabricating or assembly supplier who doesn’t hold a ISO 9001 registration has no attested system for quality control whatsoever.

IATF 16949

PCBark IATF 16949 automotive quality management certification for automotive PCB manufacturing

IATF 16949 is what prospective automotive part consumers should search for. This quality management standard extends the framework of ISO 9001, embedding the rigor expected in car manufacturing, namely the PPAP process, advanced product planning, and lot-level traceable lot history (to facilitate retracement of an in-service failure to a particular batch of production). Hence, IATF 16949 is equivalent to being an “automotive PCB manufacturer” in an automotive electronics program, as it ensures your supplier will pass a custom client specifications review.

What this means for your project

What this means for your project

For general industrial or consumer goods boards, the most pragmatic and affordable certification is likely to be a combination of ISO 9001 and IPC-A-610 Class 2. IATF 16949 only makes sense for end products related to the automotive industry; as this certification carries with it a substantial process overhead cost reflected in per-unit pricing. For consumer devices and the industrial market, this price increase brings zero additional benefits.

Environmental & Safety Compliance

Environmental & Safety Compliance — ISO 14001, RoHS, UL

These designations control the composition of the base materials and environmental management in the manufacturing facility – for the European market, they are non-negotiable requirements.

RoHS

PCBark RoHS compliance certificate for restricted hazardous substances in PCB manufacturing

RoHS controls substances such as cadmium and heavy metals from your final product. A leading cause of RoHS is heavy use of lead, which is also why lead-free construction is nearly universal on boards manufactured to meet compliance standards.

UL

PCBark UL certification for self-extinguishing PCB laminate flammability safety

UL specification means that the laminate is self-extinguishing – an important component of nearly all consumer, home, and office electronics.

ISO 14001

The ISO 14001 certification demonstrates that the manufacturer actively manages its environmental impact and systems rather than just meeting certain standards in an ad hoc fashion.

What this means for your project

What this means for your project

If any component of your product is intended to be shipped to, or transported through the EU, be sure to have RoHS certified. Not just a note at the bottom of sales literature. EU customs authorities and your own internal quality/ compliance group will verify those materials on every shipment. For any board intended for placement within a regulated environment, insist on seeing the UL Certification from the outset of design, as retro-fitting a laminate after layout will involve a PCB redesign and will create significant delays and costs.

How to Verify a Manufacturer’s Certifications

Check the certificate, not the logo

Ask for the actual certificate PDF showing the standard revision, the registrar, and the certificate number.

Confirm the scope

A certificate’s scope statement names what it covers — PCB fabrication, PCBA assembly, or both. Verify it includes the work you are buying.

Confirm it is in date

Certifications expire and require surveillance audits. Check the issue and expiry dates; ask when the last audit ran.

Verify with the registrar

Registrars and IAQG publish searchable databases. Cross-check the certificate number against the source.
